HEY, Wear This! : The Canadian Tuxedo

The Canadian Tuxedo is not only a spectacle within most public spaces, but it is also a sartorial concept revered by all who know its origins.

Now, I know what you may be thinking, “Britney and Justin coined the look back in 2001!” And while that may be partly true, there was inspiration for the look even then.

Legend has it that during a visit to Canada in 1951, actor Bing Crosby and a friend were told that he could not enter a hotel because, well, he was dressed head to toe in denim.

During this time, denim was a trend less followed and in this case, way too casual for this high-roller Canadian hotel. The hotel’s management eventually realized who he was and allowed he and his friend to enter; however, wind of the event had already journeyed its way back to the U.S. Friends of Crosby got in touch with Levi Strauss & Co., who immediately began designing a customized denim tuxedo jacket for Crosby in the event that he ever have issues wearing denim in upscale establishments again. In addition to the not-so-subtle shade that Levi Strauss & Co. threw at the incident, the designers printed the phrase “Notice to All Hotel Men” onto a leather patch in the lining of the jacket.

The Canadian Tuxedo is not only a symbol of unadulterated style and individualism, it also represents a certain attitude that only comes when one truly casts away all concern for public opinion. This look breeds confidence and strength in a way that not even four cups of coffee, two amazing selfies, and that feeling you get when you realize that your bra and underwear match can beat. Who would’ve guessed that Bing Crosby, a Canadian hotel staff, and a denim outfit were the root of what would eventually become one of the most iconic moments in pop culture history.

So, without further adieu, I give you: The Canadian Tuxedo.

This look features our Aiden Jacket, Perla Jeans, and Pixie Pump Blush 🙂
